Starship Children's Hospital
This 200-bed children's hospital contains five general and medical wards as well as specialist Infectious, Burns, Neonatal and Oncology Units. A full range of clinical services (excluding dietary) is also incorporated into the building's design which won a NZIA award in 1992.
The hospital’s design maximises natural light and ventilation by featuring long, curving ward floors and a seven-storey glass roof courtyard. While providing an airiness it also manages to achieve separation between visitors and patient/staff circulation. Also incorporated in the design were bedrooms to allow parents to stay overnight, parent lounges and a whanau unit allows larger family groups to stay. Ward layouts provide efficient, safe nursing with reduced walking distances. Single rooms are situated close to the central nursing station and multi-bed rooms towards the end of the wards.
