Designing a learning environment for today, tomorrow, and generations to come…

The users of a space know their needs best. There are no two schools exactly the same and there is no singular design solution to fit all education facilities. We've led more than 40 education projects in the last 5 years designing collaborative, solution focused, Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) that empower students to succeed.

With significant demands in New Zealand’s education needs including the Canterbury earthquakes, modernising an ageing property portfolio, managing increases in the primary school student population and increased levels of student retention at secondary school. A very high percentage of our school stock dates from the pre 1970’s, are located away from population growth areas, and are in a poor state of repair. In addition to this, we are becoming more culturally diverse with increased global influences and a strong Pacific regional outlook.

The opportunity is now that of ‘how to learn’.

In a time when technology is perpetually advancing there is a shift away from textbooks and teacher centric learning enabling a way for a wealth of learning tools that will grow with our children and guide the way for an improved education.

The challenge is, utilising evidence based research to design a tailored learning environment that responds to the specific needs of its users, the pedagogy of its school and the individual learning styles within a group of students.

By designing zones we can tailor learning environments to support particular styles of learning that are empathetic and inspirational to both students and educators. Our research and experience has led to the distinction of learning settings where schools are provided a range of spaces for example; collaboration, presentation, ICT rich, outdoor learning, and display spaces.

As well as designing replacement and new schools and helping to assess the learning environments of schools. We are involved on a higher level of how school design should respond to and support the changing needs of contemporary learning, teaching practices, and the diverse range of pedagogical approaches – to see samples of how we turn visions into reality, open the gallery.

We welcome the opportunity to meet with schools, the Ministry of Education representatives, project managers, and other people from the education community to present our research and approaches to designing learning environments.
