Site Ecology

Where a building is located and how it responds to its immediate environment is important. The aim is to minimise ecological degradation by designing buildings and systems to reduce the impact of earthworks, runoff, construction pollution and ongoing operation. This category aims to promote the following influential strategies:

  • Select sites to have low ecological impact i.e. brownfield sites, contaminated land, urban infill (not land of a high ecological value)
  • Minimise impact to surrounding landscapes during construction .i.e. Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans
  • Select sites near public transport, amenities and have access to good daylight
  • Manage a project's impact onsite i.e. stormwater detention systems or light pollution reduction
  • Design to improve the ecological value of the site i.e. increasing bio-diversity through wetlands and additional planting
  • Reduce pollution
