There are over 70 Canterbury Standard Blocks in schools throughout Christchurch. This project required this standard school building to be upgraded from a standard block of classrooms to a Modern Learning Environment (MLE), with minimal alteration to the existing building shell.
The brief from The Ministry of Education called for this standard school building to be upgraded from a typical block of traditional classrooms, to a MLE. The block was to be opened up becoming home to a range of both indoor and outdoor adaptable learning settings, while simultaneously adhering to budget constraints that required the project to be completed with minimal alteration to the existing building shell.
The project was approached with multiple concept variations in mind to deal with budget constraints. The client was therefore presented a concept with variety of design options which they could mix and match to tailor the design to their needs and budget.
To do this economically and effectively presented a substantial challenge to the design team. BIM skills were taken to a new level to capture all the design variations and come up with an adaptive concept that did not extend the time frame for concept design.
